Daytime Emmys: Best Actress Category

Posted by timeaftertime on July 18, 2009 at 9:00 AM

In preperation for the 2009 Daytime Emmy Awards I will be presenting the Emmy reels for the acting categories that each actor and actress submitted.  I also shall provide my thoughts on  each of the actors and actresses performace.

First up: Best Actress in a Daytime Drama

Jeanne Cooper as Katherine Chancellor/Marge Cotrooke, The Young and The Restless

Critique:  Cooper reminds us that her acting skills are not limited to playing one character, but two at the same time and she makes each character have distinctive qualities that sets them apart from one another.

Biggest Obstacles to an Emmy Win:

  • Debbie Morgan and Susan Flannery.
  • She won in 2008 and there are rarely back to back winners.
  • Although an exellent performace as two characters, this was not the standout reel.

Odds: 7 out of 10

Debbie Morgan as Angela "Angie" Hubbard, All My Children

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

Critique:  Over 20 years of history was wrapped into this scene.  And Debbie Morgan played out all the right beats.  She was able to draw you into her range of emotions as the unthinkable happened right before her eyes.  Proving that she is All My Children's not so hidden gem.

Biggest Obstacles to an Emmy Win:

  • Jeanee Cooper, dual role might be the clincher over a standout reel.
  • First time nominee's don't always win.

Odds: 9 out of 10

Susan Flannery as Stephanie Forrester, The Bold and The Beautiful

Critique: Flannery played the scene with more subtle emotions verses the typical high drama in a would be "death" scene.  She was able to convey the strength and courage her character has always had even in the face of a crisis.

Biggest Obstacles to an Emmy Win:

  • Debbie Morgan and Jeannee Cooper.
  • This wasn't a standout scene.
  • She has won 4 pervious Emmy's and is a regular nominee.   Voters could feel like they have been there and done that.

Odds: 7 out of 10

Susan Haskell as Marty Staybrook, One Life To Live

Critique: Haskell's performace was on point.  She maked you feel the confusion as Marty has to deal with the shocking truth and is at the same time able to interweave a sense, of distrust, guilt, and disgustedness at at the same time.

Biggest Obstacles to an Emmy Win:

  • Jeanne Cooper, Debbie Morgan, and Susan Flannery.
  • If popluarity is the game then she is at the bottom of that list.
  • Strong standout scene but a bit over the top with the gun toting holdup.  Generally the more simplistic the scene is the better your odds of winning are.

Odds: 5 out of 10

Marua West as Carly Tanning, As The World Turns

Critique: West played a more subtle version of Carly in this scene.  She was able to convey more with less and was miles away from what you might have expected from the actress to turn in.  Still she proves that she is a shining talent.

Biggest Obstacles to an Emmy Win:

  • Jeanne Cooper and Debbie Morgan.
  • This wasn't a standout scene.
  • A highly emotional reel would have done better and had she known that they were only allowed to turn in one reel she might have made a different choice.

Odds: 6 out of 10

David's Thoughts

Who do you think should win?
Now if everything goes the way I believe it will then Debbie Morgan would be the winner because in 2008 the return of Jesse and Angie was the most talked about and praised storyline in daytime.   It gave them four months worth of good storyline including: an emotional reuniting scene, a wedding to remember, and the classic soap hero saves the day when Angie was kidnapped.

Who Will Win?

My bets are on Debbie Morgan.  Her combination as a legendary popular vet, stellar acting skills, being well liked amoung the voters, and a standout scene this year should seal the deal.  Debbie would also be the frist African American actress to win the award and the first  African American actress to ever be nomianted in the leading acting category.

Who would the upset win be?

Susan Haskell.  She is up against some pretty high caliber vetran actresses.  Yet if she won she would pull the coo of the century.

Now that you have heard my thoughts why don't you share your thoughts

and answer these three questions in the comment box:

1.  Who do you think should win?

2.  Who will win?

3.  Would the upset win be?

I don't watch that soap but I think I'd go with Debbie Morgan. She's a really great actress. She was just creepy on Charmed. I do watch The Bold And The Beautiful but yeah you tend not to get people who win twice in a row. For this category I don't think any of them would actually upset me.

I'm with you on Debi but it ain't gonna happen, you know how that's going down. I believe Marty over at OLTL will win, i mean white girl comes back from the dead and fall's in love with her rapist. The upset would be Carly over at ATWT don't get me wrong she can bring it however i think there were other actresses who should have been nominated instead of Carly

I like three ladies: Jeannie, Susan Debbie. Don't care about the others. I don't think JC should win this year though. Debbie is a great actress. I was introduced to her on one of my fav. old shows, CHARMED. I only happened to see her on AMC when I saw she was a nominee, since I don't watch that show. Erica Kane and her ego drove me away from that show years ago; especially after Josh Duhamel left for LAS VEGAS. Anyway, I would be happy for Debbie if she won. I like her from CHARMED and I don't need to see her on AMC to know she is a good actress. However I want my QUEEN to win!!! lol .... and my queen is the incomparable Susan Flannery!!!! I LOVE SF. I also think Maura West is over rated. KKL from BB is a better actress who has never gotten the credit she deserves!
